Bus Service Improvement Plan
Bus Service Improvement Plan
We have been working to develop improvements to the bus routes between New Bridge Street and Shields Roads and invite you to have your say on these proposals.
We have designed these changes to improve the reliability of buses and help you move around the city, while also improving safety for more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists with the addition of signalised crossings.
You can view the drawings of these plans (PDF) and changes to the current layout include:
• Relocate the bus shelter on the New Bridge Street route towards the city centre
• Remove 10 pay and display parking spaces to extend the bus lane on New Bridge Street towards the city centre
• Extend the bus lane on Byker Bridge towards the city centre
• Install a new toucan crossing on Byker Bridge
• Reduce the speed from 40mph to 30mph on Byker Bridge
• Add signalised crossings to the Morrisons and Shields Road junction
These improvements are part of the larger North East Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) project, which will make buses a better travel choice for people by making them cheaper, easier to use, and more reliable. This is supported by £163.5 million government funding in the region. You can find out more at northeast-ca.gov.uk/how-we-work/transport/bus-service-improvement-plan
You have until Sunday 9 February 2025 to have your say on these plans by sending your comments to transport@newcastle.gov.uk, or stakeholders can arrange an appointment to share their feedback.
We will use your comments to inform any changes to our proposed plans and we will publish more information online with final plans going to Cabinet later in 2025.
