Children and Young People

You're never too young to join the library!

Children and young people can borrow books, board games and DVDs for free from any of our libraries in Newcastle - plus eBooks, eAudiobooks, and eMagazines for free from home! Some libraries have footballs to lend too.

We'd like you all to enjoy Reading for Pleasure, helping young people grow into productive adults. There are no age categories on our book stock, we just use “Stories” as our headers.  Reading for Pleasure is about children and young people themselves choosing a book they would like to read, regardless of age or ability (for example, some children prefer a book with lots of images). You can borrow:

  • Board books
  • Picture books
  • Starting School Book Bags
  • Read Alone books
  • Junior Fiction
  • Graphic novels and young adult titles
  • Junior Non-Fiction, selected by our librarians to inspire a love of exploration and learning
  • Books that help with school topics
  • Books to help with issues like bullying or questions on health and wellbeing
  • Footballs (from Blakelaw, Denton Burn, High Heaton, Kenton, Newburn, Walker libraries).

We have free internet for you to use, study spaces with desks and comfortable spots for you to curl up with a book. We hold regular story times, craft events and author and illustrator visits - and every summer, you can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge (and maybe win a prize!)!

How to Join

Join in person in your local library or request a membership via our online form. For under 14s, parental permission will be required.

  • If children are joining the library as a new member we will ask parents to give you consent when joining - this will allow us to give you full access to all library services for a year.
  • If you wish to borrow a toy, you'll need an adult library member with you. Toys are available at Gosforth, Kenton and Newburn Libraries straight away or you can order one to pick up at another library.

Did you know?

From 10 - 11am every Saturday on level 3, City Library,  we will avoid any excess noise to make the library quieter and calmer to help customers with autism and other additional needs.
