We have lots of exciting events and activities planned to celebrate the Lunar New Year. 

Lion Dance

On Monday 27 January at 1.30pm ,City Library will be an explosion of dancing and music as the mythical Chinese Lion pays us a visit as part of Newcastle’s programme of events to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Lion will eat the traditional greens and bestow good luck on City Library for the year ahead. Everyone is welcome to watch the performance. 

Year of the Snake Crafts

Drop into your local library between 27 January and 1 February during our normal opening hours to make your own paper chain snake.  Suitable for all the family

Lunar New Year Story times

We’re sharing stories to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Drop in to the children’s area on Level 3 at 11am or 2pm on Saturday 1 February to hear a story or two and to take part in a traditional Chinese craft. Suitable for all the family

Did you know?

In Chinese tradition, each year is associated with one of 12 animals. Chinese New Year marks the start of the next animal in the cycle. 2025 is the year of the snake.
