Fiver Fest returns to the Grainger Market

If every adult in Newcastle spent just £5 per week locally at independent shops rather than online or in big supermarkets, it would mean an extra £58.5 million each year going into the local economy.

That’s the message from Totally Locally, the grass roots movement that encourages people in towns and cities across the county to support local independent businesses and shops. These are the bedrock of our communities, and when they thrive, they create real jobs, cohesive towns and strong economies. 

Fiver Fest is a great way for local people to show their support for this, with a growing number of Grainger Market traders getting on board. They will be joining other independent traders up and down the country putting on special £5 offers over the next two weeks to show the diversity and value of what they sell, and to say thank you to the communities that support them.

Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet member for Employment and Culture at Newcastle City Council said: “I am delighted that so many Grainger Market traders are again supporting Fiver Fest, and I hope more get on board over the next two weeks.  

“What a great way of further raising the profile of the market and for the traders to promote the variety and quality of what they offer.

“Independent traders are at the heart of Newcastle and play a vital role in creating new jobs and improving the city’s prosperity.

“They also play an important role in supporting the local high street and encouraging local people to rediscover them again. This is something we fully support in Newcastle.”

Fiver Fest starts on Saturday 15 February and runs until Saturday 29 February 2020. Here is a list of the traders to date* who have signed up, and details of their offer.  New offers will be added as they become available:

-    French Oven: a £5 goodie bag (worth much more)

-    Scented Melts: 5 melts with t lights and a small oil burner for £5 

-    NIL LIVING: £5 deal on reusable make up wipes (usually £6) and £5 reusable cutlery combo set (RRP £7)

     Bacon or sausage sandwiches served with any tea or coffee for two people (served before 11am) - £5
     Freshly baked scones or toasted tea cakes, tea or coffee – 2 for £5 (served after 2pm hours)
