Following media reports that people seeking asylum could be housed in vessels on Tyneside and in other areas of the country, Cllr Nick Kemp, Leader of Newcastle City Council, has issued the following statement.
“We are totally against plans to house people seeking asylum in vessels moored on Tyneside and in other areas of the country.
“It is inhumane to treat people in this way and it does not give them access to the vital support that communities can provide during this difficult time in their lives.
“Newcastle is a City of Sanctuary and is proud of its long history of supporting vulnerable people who are in need of a safe place to rebuild their lives.
“We are committed to fighting against these plans and are calling on the Government to find a better solution for all those involved.”
