Second coronavirus case confirmed in Newcastle

Statement from Director of Public Health for Newcastle City Council, Professor Eugene Milne

“We can confirm a second adult – detected through contact tracing from the first Newcastle case – has tested positive for COVID-19. So far they have not required hospital treatment and are following Public Health guidance by self-isolating for 14 days. We wish them a full and speedy recovery.

“No other positive cases have been identified at this point among tested contacts, and we do not expect this second case to significantly increase the number of people who will need to self-isolate.

“The council continues to work closely with Public Health England, the NHS and all our health and care partners to prevent and delay further spread of the virus. 

“The risk to people living, working, studying and visiting Newcastle remains low and it is business as usual across the city.

“We ask people to continue to follow good hygiene practices and if you show symptoms please ring NHS 111 rather than ring your GP or go to a hospital.  The latest national information and advice is available at www.gov.uk/coronavirus. Public Health England and the council will continue to provide timely updates so please check official sources.”
