North Walbottle Waggonway Group - Fact Sheet.

The group was established in September 2017 following Newcastle City Council’s decision not to build a Sports Hub on land at the rear of St Johns Estate.

The focus of our Group is the bridle path which runs between North Walbottle Rd and Stamfordham Rd along with the field on each side of this path.

 Our aim is to preserve, enhance and protect this area for the benefit of all residents, now and for generations to come.

We have successfully worked with a range of funding providers and Newcastle City Council in order to work towards the above aim.

• Key achievements to date include: -
 Installation of three information lecterns
 Installation of three benches
 Planting of 15 trees along the bridle path (unfortunately 3 have been lost due to storm damage)
 Working with Westerhope Local History Society, looking to promote the heritage of the site

• Ongoing projects include: -
 Installation of an information/notice board at the North Walbottle Rd entrance to the bridle path
 Installation of two replica coal tubs. One at North Walbottle Rd and one at Stamfordham Rd entrances to the site
  Planting of wild flowers and spring bulbs to further enhance the area
 Working with ecology officers with the aim of enriching wildlife habitat of the area and returning livestock to the fields

We meet bi-monthly, in September, November, January, March, May and July, normally on the second Monday of the month at 7.00 p.m. at Westerhope Community Association
