New summer events coming to the East End

A number of community events will be held in Newcastle’s East End this summer as part of a drive to revitalise the high street and bring local people and businesses together.

Hadrian Square at the heart of Shields Road, Byker will be the focus of the family-friendly fun on Saturday 29 July, Saturday 5 August and Sunday 6 August, with circus performers and puppet and unicycle shows.

These events are free, with funding from the Newcastle East High Streets project and are an extension of the Byker Arts Festival taking place on nearby Ford Street.

As well as circus performances, Recyke y’Bike will be offering bike book swaps, pop up stalls and free bike checks across Heaton, Walker and Byker including Hadrian Square on Friday 4 August.

A programme of engagement events will also take place over the summer, including walks and drop-ins to help develop plans to improve the area.

The events are being held as part of Newcastle City Council’s £2.8m project to transform five local high streets in the East End of the city, aimed at boosting footfall and bringing back pride into the local area.

Cllr Alex Hay, Cabinet member for a Thriving City said: “We are committed to improving the East End and make it a better place for everyone who lives and works there.

“Shields Road is often over-looked as a shopping destination, but this project aims to change this.

“As well as putting on events for local people, we’re harnessing the community spirit in the East End by enhancing the public space, welcoming new businesses and creating better high streets.

“At the heart of this approach is listening to local people and businesses and acting on the improvements they would like to see, and I am delighted to see the progress we are making.

“We have a long-term vision to restore public pride in the East End, so I would encourage everyone to get involved and apply for the grants that are available so there can be more events for local people to enjoy, right on their doorstep.”

The pilot project, Newcastle East –Inclusive, Healthy, Vibrant High Streets is funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority’s Place Innovation Programme and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Newcastle City Council will use the pot of money to bring empty properties back into use, provide support for local traders and create greener and more attractive public spaces, as well as to develop a long-term investment plan for the area through extensive community engagement and consultation.

Local organisations from the project area can apply for grants of up to £10,000 for events and activity that help to animate the five high streets. Funding is also available to bring empty properties back in to use as part of a drive to boost footfall for the high streets.
