Active Newcastle, the council’s health and wellbeing service whose mission it is to get everyone active in the city, has challenged everyone who can, to walk every day in May as part of National Walking Month and support a good cause.

National Walking Month takes place every year to encourage people to take to their feet.

The ‘Walk, Donate, Nominate’ challenge calls on people to walk every day, this could be walking around your local neighbourhood, or going to your local park, walking the dog, going for a buggy walk, stair exercises or taking part in a Live Active Newcastle session all count as part of the everyday challenge.

The donate element doesn’t necessarily have to be a financial donation, it could be as simple as donating a smile or helping to put your neighbours bin out. Financial donations can be made to Citylife Line, or any other charity of choice.

People can then nominate someone they know to take part in the challenge, this can be done on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Tik Tok using the hashtag #walkdonatenominate.

The challenge has the support of NUFC Women’s Team and there’s hopes to have more famous faces in the city joining the cause.

The campaign has been inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s determination to walk lengths of his garden to raising millions for the NHS.

Citylife Line is a citywide community response set up by Newcastle City Council to help the most vulnerable in Newcastle affected by COVID-19.

It was launched with the aim of providing essential provisions and support to the most vulnerable residents in Newcastle, Citylife Line has already smashed its target of £30,000 in only 10 days.

The council has stressed that government guidelines around social distancing must be followed, this includes social distancing, staying local and using open spaces near to your home.

Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of the Council said “National Walking Month is a brilliant opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and boost physical and mental wellbeing, within the current guidelines. The challenge element has certainly made it more interesting.

“It’s a tough time for many of our residents in this unprecedented situation. Almost 2,000 people have contacted the helpline to ask for support, it really has been a lifeline for many.

“I will be taking part in the #WalkDonateNominate challenge myself and have nominated Jim Beirne from Urban Green Newcastle. Hopefully the amazing people in our city can really get behind this campaign, improve their health and support a great cause.

“Just remember to follow government guidelines around social distancing, staying local and don’t travel unnecessarily.”
