Police and Crime Commissioner election result

At the declaration at Sunderland, the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate was declared winner for the post, which covers Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Northumberland.

Ballots for the PCC election had been cast simultaneously with those in the local elections on Thursday May 6.

The turnout for the PCC election in Newcastle was 38.2% and for the force area in total was 36.9%.

Ms McGuinness was declared winner once second preference votes had been taken into account, ahead of Conservative Party candidate Duncan Crute.

In the supplementary voting system used in PCC elections, if no candidate receives at least 50% of the initial count, all but the two candidates with the highest number of votes are eliminated and second preference votes are added to their initial totals. At that point, the candidate with the highest number of votes wins.
