Newcastle City Council has launched a bursary scheme to provide financial support to young carers in the city who are planning to attend sixth form.
For several years the Newcastle Schools Bursary scheme has provided financial support for sixth form pupils from low income families, are in care, have recently left care or who are receiving benefits in their own right.
This has now been extended so that from September 2019 the bursary scheme will be available to young people who provide care that are planning to attend sixth form at one of the secondary schools in the scheme.
Young carers will be able to apply for up to £300 to help with their studies. Pupils regularly use the extra money for books, equipment, clothing, travel expenses and other costs associated with remaining in education.
Cllr Veronica Dunn, cabinet member for education and skills said: “The introduction of the young carer bursary scheme builds on the continuing success of our existing schools bursary scheme and helps to encourage increasing numbers of young people to continue studying.
“I am delighted we are able to provide young people, regardless of their circumstances and backgrounds, the opportunity to remain in education and develop their skills.
“Newcastle has a range of learning and employment opportunities, and we are dedicated to ensuring that our resources are available to all young people in the city to help them progress on their chosen career pathways. I encourage anybody who thinks they fit the criteria to contact our bursary team on 0191 2755060 for advice and support with their applications.”
Bursaries are available to young people aged 16-19 across a wide range of schools, colleges and other types of learning providers. Young people should enquire with their chosen learning provider as to whether they have a bursary scheme available and how to apply for it.
