Disruptive work on key commuter route to finish earlier

In order to accelerate the resurfacing programme, the council will have teams on site during off peak hours from 09:30am to 3.30pm and then from 6pm until midnight on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 August. 

The remaining works will be completed during evening hours and should be complete by Friday 21 August, rather than 23 August as previously scheduled. 

The programme has been carefully planned to minimise the noise disruption to residents living nearby. 

Once the resurfacing is complete on Kingston Park Road, additional resurfacing will be required to Windsor Way later in the year when further works have taken place.  The scheme will be fully complete in October.

A spokesperson from Newcastle City Council said: “We would like to thank residents and those using the area for their patience during the resurfacing programme.  

“We will still have lane closures and temporarily signals in place so our teams can work safely alongside running traffic, but we’ve extended the programme to night-time working to minimise disruption to commuters and accelerate the programme.  

“As this is a key commuter route, delays are likely, and we would advise people to use alternative routes where possible during key commuter hours.  

“We apologise for any inconvenience and would ask people to bear with us as we complete this essential works to a major commuter route.” 

The resurfacing programme is the most disruptive stage of the £1.7 million road widening scheme, which is designed to address issues of access for people entering their estate due to queuing traffic, as well as ease congestion on the roads next to the A1.  The council has also installed walking and cycling infrastructure to help people get around their area safely using cleaner and greener ways of travel.  

The works started in May 2019, as part of a package of improvements to ease congestion on the approach to the busy A1 roundabout, as well as installing new walking and cycling facilities.  

With major housing developments planned and being delivered nearby, the junction and road link was identified as a problem junction that needed investment to improve efficiency and journey time reliability, as well as providing greener travel choices for people living in the new housing developments.  

Once the resurfacing programme is complete, further works will then take place in liaison with Highways England, and the scheme will be fully complete in October.
