The Wear Red Day flag will be raised in Newcastle on Friday (October 20) as the city reaffirms its commitment to stamping out racism.
Wear Red Day is annual day of action from anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card which urges people to come together to show there is no room for racism.
On Friday, the Wear Red Day flag will be raised at Newcastle Civic Centre at midday, with Newcastle City Council’s Leader, Cllr Nick Kemp, and Lord Mayor, Cllr Veronica Dunn, set to be joined by guests including representatives from Show Racism the Red Card.
Cllr Irim Ali, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for a Dynamic City and the council’s equalities lead, said: “I’m incredibly proud of how inclusive and welcoming our city is towards people of all backgrounds and it’s really pleasing that we’re able to show our solidarity towards fighting discrimination in all its forms. We’re constantly trying to do more, including a commitment to developing a race charter for the city to help tackle inequalities and, just earlier this month, we took a collective stance as a council in adopting UNISON’s anti-racism charter.
“Racism can tear communities apart and ruin people’s lives. We’re coming together to reaffirm our commitment that racism, and all other forms of discrimination, have no place in our city.
“I’d like to welcome anybody who wishes to show their support to join us at the Civic Centre as we raise the Wear Red Day flag this Friday.”
Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism charity which launched in 1996 with the support of then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who has since gone on to be awarded the Freedom of Newcastle for his role in setting up the charity and continuing to support its work.
People can show their support by wearing red next Friday or by donating via text to Show Racism the Red Card. Find out more here.
