In response to the ongoing cost-of -living crisis we will be providing thousands of children with support during half term with fun, engaging activities, and the provision of a healthy meal.
Nearly 17,000 children in the city will benefit through the distribution of vouchers during February half-term drawn from the Household Support Fund.
There will also be a Winter Wellbeing Hub programme of council funded community venues and projects across the city during February half-term where children eligible for free school meals can access fun and exciting activities which will include a nutritious meal.
We have stepped in to provide this additional support as the latest example of our commitment to the Evry plan. This plan unites more than 20 partners from health, education, business, cultural and charitable sectors to formulate an ambitious city-wide collective mission to support young people to have the best possible future.
Last autumn the plan launched a free travel pilot for care-experienced young people in Newcastle and Gateshead. It will be building on this with new employment and work experience opportunities, supporting community providers via the annual £500,000 Youth Fund, free breakfast clubs for 4–10-year-olds, and investment through Children & Families Newcastle in vibrant community spaces offering support to families.
Cllr Sylvia Copley, Cabinet Member, a Growing City, Newcastle City Council said “Families are really feeling the pinch right now and supporting them through the cost-of-living crisis is a top priority for us.
“This additional provision during February half term is vital to ensure children continue to enjoy engaging activities as well as a meal during the school holidays.
“We are committed to supporting our children and young people to have the best possible start in life and put them on a path towards a positive future.”
