A new campaign is launched today (24 February) to help recruit school crossing patrol officers.
Newcastle City Council is looking to fill two vacancies across the city including Gosforth and Heaton to improve road safety for children going to and from school each day.
As part of the campaign, the council hope to enlist the help of local people, schools, local councillors and community groups to help spread the word and attract people living in the area. Drop-in events will be held in the communities where the vacancies are based for people to come and speak to local officers about the roles and find out more.
Using the same approach, the council has successfully filled roles for school crossing patrols in Chapel House and West Denton.
Cllr Jane Byrne, cabinet member for a connected, clean city, said: “We’ve struggled to fill vacancies for school crossing patrols through our normal recruitment process so we’re hoping that this more community-focused style of approach will help us fill these much-needed roles quickly due to the importance of children and young people getting to school safely.
“These are great opportunities for people who want to be involved in their local communities and will make a real difference to the people living there. These jobs are open to most people - no qualifications or experience is necessary, and we will provide full training and a uniform. As the work is only a couple of hours a day during term-time, it means it can fit round other commitments people may have, such as hobbies or even other jobs.
“We’re encouraging local people to help spread the word and help us find some great candidates who will play a key role in the heart of local communities.”
The roles are ideal for people who enjoy working outdoors, is community spirited and enjoys meeting new people. The salary is £5,559 for twelve hours a week, during term-time only. The school crossing patrols are for the Great North Road in Gosforth, the Coast Road in Heaton,
Anyone interested in the roles are encouraged to come along and meet the transport team at the following events.
28 February – 3pm to 5pm – Newcastle Golf Club, Great North Road, Gosforth
2 March– 3pm to 5pm - People’s Theatre, Stephenson Road, Heaton
